Getting Started - Lesson 1 - Transcript

Kathy:

Hi and welcome to real raise 101.  I’m Kathy Dailey, producer of RealRaise.  I’m here today with David Hubbard to get you started with this introductory audio program on how to get a raise.

This is the first lesson in a series that you’ll be receiving via e-mail.

Today, we’re going to cover our objectives and how the course works.  We’ll explain how you can get the most out of the material and then we’ll get into action!

With me is David Hubbard, the author of Real Raise.  David has been in the workplace for over 30 years, and worked in over 25 industries, such as banking, government, manufacturing, telecommunications, and entertainment, among others.

He’s worked as an employee, manager, business owner, recruiter, franchisee, contract worker, and consultant.

Some of the well-known companies he’s worked for include IBM, Bureau of Land Management, Qwest, Gateway Computers, Morgan Stanley, Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, and numerous others.

So David, you have extensive experience in so many areas.  What caused you to want to create this course on how to get a raise?

David:

Well, Kathy, for all those years, I shared the excitement of raise-getting with hundreds of clients and coworkers.  However, hardly anyone seemed to be able to consistently, year after year, get a Real Raise.  I saw people who were able to collect a substantial raise one year, only to be knocked right back to the standard cost of living increase the following year.  Frustration was common, and I knew there had to be a better way.

As I spent time in all the various places I worked, I saw enormous unrealized potential in many of the employees.

I would see unfair situations where a deserving employee was passed over for a raise, while some other less deserving employees got raises and promotions.

I read everything I could get my hands on about how to get a raise, and found much of it to be incomplete, sometimes misleading, and frequently biased toward employers.  I noticed that following the common advice, people ended up discouraged and disappointed.

Through my own experience, and that of many others, I put together a complete system of common sense principles and ideas that will consistently enable anyone to get a real raise.

I continued to do research into psychology and human behavior and refined this system into the audio course that you’re listening to today.  It is designed to be a complete step by step method to make getting a raise inevitable for anyone in the workforce who is willing to take action.

As you listen, I want everyone to know that even though I do have an extensive background, I don’t want you to do the things suggested simply because I said so.

Everything in this course is based on common sense.  If you can’t reconcile something being said with common sense, you should disregard it.

If it can’t be tied back to common sense, ignore it.

But when you put these suggestions into action, look for the results.  Then you’ll know it’s working.

Kathy:

Well, David, you mentioned the term ‘real raise’.  Some of our listeners may not know what we mean by ‘real raise’, so here’s our definition.  A Real Raise is a substantial increase in value provided to you, by your employer.  I’ll repeat that.  A Real Raise is a substantial increase in value provided to you, by your employer.

Now, a substantial increase in value would not be the same thing as a cost of living adjustment.  The cost of living adjustment is a small increase in your salary for the purpose of offsetting inflation.  In the United States, where we are, our rate of inflation has been very close to 2% for the past few years.  So a nominal raise of 2% would not be a real raise.  It’s merely a cost of living adjustment.  If you got a 3% raise, that would be your 2% cost of living adjustment, and a 1% real raise.

David:

That’s right, Kathy.  Of course, I like to look at figures much higher than 1% for a real raise, although certainly 1% is better than no percent at all.

Let me clarify what this course is about.  We’ll be teaching you how to make more money at your present job, or in some cases, make more money at a new job.  You’ll be applying these timeless, common sense principles to get what you want from your career while enjoying it, and in addition, you’ll find that you have a brighter future.  You’ll be having more fun not only in your career, but in your personal life as well.  You’ll be gaining new skills and putting them into action and practice.

Kathy:

We also want to tell you what this course is NOT about.

We won’t be teaching conventional wisdom that you might have previously obtained from articles or friends, coworkers, and relatives, or other well-meaning, but not completely informed people.

It’s not about tricks, manipulation, or gimmicks, and we’re not going to be asking you to compromise your ethics.

This course is not about starting your own business, or network marketing, or getting an additional part-time job to make more money.  And it’s not a scam claiming to make you millions on the Internet.

David:

You can expect to discover the true path to how to get a raise.  We’ll give you the real story, tell you what to do, and what to avoid.

You’ll discover some reasons why employers may not have given you raises in the past, and why people that you previously did not think deserved raises got those raises.

You’ll also discover the things you absolutely must do to get a raise.  Most of these are not mentioned in the conventional wisdom found out there in books, magazines and Internet articles.

You’ll learn how to get a real raise every year for the rest of your career.  You’ll benefit from it forever, if you pay attention, do the exercises, and put these ideas into action.  You only have to learn it once to have the benefit of Real Raises for the rest of your career.

As continuing education, Real Raise 102 will be available at the end of this course.  Real Raise102 is an intensive, how-to, follow-on course designed to show you how to implement these ideas in your career.

Let me explain the difference between Real Raise 101 and 102 this way.  Real Raise 101 will show you what to do.  Real Raise 102 will show you how to do it.

Currently, there is no charge for real raise 102, but it will be a paid product in the future.  If you are willing to provide feedback, and help us in the creation process of that course, you will have access to it for free.  However, real raise 102 will be recommended only for those who are serious about getting a raise, and willing to take the action required.

Kathy:

The Real Raise system works on the concept of spaced repetition of the lessons.  What that means is that you’ll be listening to each lesson more than once – over a period of time.

Make Real Raise a part of your life.  Ideally, think about it at least once a day, no matter how briefly.

The lessons will be available on our website, Real Raise.com, and it would be possible to sit down and go through all the lessons and exercises, all at once.

You’re welcome to do that, as long as you listen to the lessons again as you receive the e-mails.  You will receive these periodically, and each one will direct you to a lesson.

From time to time you’ll be instructed to complete small written assignments that are designed to get you thinking and participating.  The point is not whether or not you can answer the questions and do the assignments, because I’m sure that everyone listening can easily do that.  The point is to get you into action and reap the additional benefit of putting your answers to these questions in writing.  This material will also be available on our website.

David:

This course is presented in an audio format.  There are several important reasons why we do that.  We don’t want you to have to ‘make room’ in your life while you take this course.  We want you to be able to absorb this material while doing other things, and by providing it in audio format means you don’t need dedicated time for sitting and listening to the course.  You can listen in your car, while exercising, while participating in your hobby, or while doing chores around the house.

You get to take the course when and where you want to.  It’s designed to be convenient for you.

You can download these lessons and put them on a variety of media: personal computers, IPods, or CDs.

We’re providing written format as well as audio.

All of this encourages repetition, which is an important part of the learning process.

Kathy:

So who should be taking this course?

Well, ideally, it’s for salaried employees and contract workers at companies with more than one employee.  It’s also beneficial for those in sales.  It doesn’t particularly matter what industry you’re in.  However, if you’re in a very structured industry, like say, the military, you may have to become creative in employing some of the strategies.

David:

So let’s review what you’ll be doing.

You will need to listen to each lesson more than once.  Repetition is an outstanding teacher.  And in order to get real results, you must do the exercises and follow the other suggestions.  Listening for entertainment is ok, but don’t expect results if you aren’t willing to put in an effort.

Then you’ll be taking these ideas and practicing them in your life.  Don’t worry if you are not good at some of the skills at first.  With practice, you’ll improve.

We also ask that you keep an open mind.  That’s crucial for change, and a raise is change.  You will also need an open mind to be open to new ideas.  After all, were the old ones really working?

Kathy:

An open mind will also help you take action.  What will happen if you learn this material perfectly, but take no action?

Absolutely nothing!  Except you may get very frustrated.

Everything you learn here is useless if you don’t act on it.  Remember that saying ‘knowledge is power’?  What they really mean is knowledge combined with action is power.

David:

So let’s get in action with our first written exercise.  To do it, you will need to go to www.realraise.com/studyguides, and download and print out the pdf file titled ExpectationAgreement.pdf.

If you’re not at your computer and the internet, do this later.  I’ll read what it says momentarily.

First, I don’t mean to offend anyone by the simplicity and bluntness of this exercise.  This and following exercises are designed to ease you into action with material.  Raises will not magically appear merely by listening.  Some action on your part is required.

So if you don’t have the file ‘ExpectationAgreement.pdf’ printed out and in front of you, here’s what it says:

Expectation Agreement

This is an agreement between you and you, a personal agreement with yourself.

As a student of Real Raise 101, I choose the following outcome from the two choices below: (select only one)

I understand that by not printing this agreement and by not signing it, and further, by not taking any other action except listening to or reading the course materials, I am unlikely to get a Real Raise, now or in the future.  By taking no action, I am by default choosing this outcome.  I realize that no action is required.

I understand and agree that by taking action on the concepts and ideas of real raise 101, I can expect fantastic results to whatever extent that I take action and implement these ideas.  By checking this box, signing below, and crossing out the paragraph above, I am choosing this outcome.

Then sign on the line below and place this exercise in a folder or binder, which you will use for later exercises and handouts.

Kathy:

Again, please don’t be offended by the simplicity of this exercise.  Taking action is such an important part of Real Raise, we just had to have an exercise on it.  Congratulations – you’ve taken the first step in getting a Real Raise!

Can we promise you will get results?  Well, we don’t know what kind of consistent, dedicated action you will take.  But we do know that if you persevere and take small, consistent actions over time, you will reap the results.  Career development through Real Raise is a way of life.  Learn the principles once, and you will benefit for a lifetime.

David:

Well, that’s it for today.  Do the exercise and check out RealRaise.com.  When you get the email for the next lesson, listen to it at that time.  If you have previously listened to it, listen to it again.

I look forward to sharing with you the rest of the Real Raise process!
